Systematical design of the grinding tool profile and the machining strategy can enhance the load capacity of the tooth root by improved sub-surface quality and tooth root radius. Thus, the tooth root durability increases. For the continuous generating grinding less knowledge about the influence of the variety of gear and grinding worm specific data as well as machining parameters on the tooth root sub-surface and ground gear profile is available. The main objective of this research work is the fundamental understanding of the material engagement during tooth root machining for continuous generating grinding. The investigations focus on the interactions of the geometrical gear- and grinding worm data, grinding worm specification and machining parameters on the one side and the residual stresses, changes of material structure and profile deviations on the other side. Experimental grinding operations, material removal simulations as well as analytical process observation will lead to the aimed main goal of this work.
