SPP 1000:  Theatralität - Theater als kulturelles Modell in den Kulturwissenschaften

Subject Area Humanities
Term from 1996 to 2002
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5466641

The priority programme "Theatricality" is designed for a systematic examination of theatrical processes - their function and meaning - in European culture. It deals with the question, if - concerning the status of theatrical processes - the European culture differs fundamentally from non-european and especially oral cultures, as it has been supposed for a long time. Thereby, the problem of continuity and break within European cultural history is faced in a new way. It is expected, that the priority programme will not only allow new insights in the relationship between our contemporary culture and cultures of the past, but that it will also lead to a new understanding of our cultural history, its epochs and transitions. The focus on theatrical processes implies a shift of the main interest of the humanities, that have priviledged texts an monuments so far. It is a primary concern of the priority programme to test theatre as a common cultural model for all the humanities and social sciences. This concept shall open up new ways of interdisciplinary cooperation. In this sense, theatricality - with its four aspects: performance, production (mise en scène), corporality and perception - is on trial as a basic anthropological category.
