Studies on the use and trade of glass in the Decapolis from the Hellenistic to the Umayyad periods based on stratified finds from a rural settlement (Tell Ziraa/Northern Jordan)

Subject Area Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies
Term from 2014 to 2015
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 258709621

The aim of the proposed project is the establishing of a basis for the research on use and trade of glass in the Decapolis region during the Hellenistic to Umayyad periods. It should be emphasized that the glass from a rural settlement in the ancient Near East has been rarely presented so far, in fact it has not been done for the Decapolis region at all. The analysis will aim to answer a number of research questions not previously looked at in depth. In order to have a reliable basis for the investigation, a new methodology of identifying glass sherds will be used. This focused study of the glass finds from Tall Ziraa thus has the potential to become an important building block for further inquiries into the glass of the Decapolis, while also introducing a new, more reliable methodology into Near Eastern glass research.
