Final Report Abstract

In Central Spain Loess have been deposited mainly in cold and arid phases, correlating very precisely with Heinrich-events. There is only one phase, in which Loess was accumulated during warm arid conditions. Exactly this phase matches with the time of Neanderthal extinction in Central Spain. Loess-Paleosol-sequences were dated in a high resolution with best accuracy. The mineralogical composition of the Loess points to a complex transport system with prevailing western winds and short transport. On Fuerteventura reddish silty layers are separating the dune generations. These reddish layers were always interpreted as being soils, but they are not; indeed these reddish silty layers are built up almost by dust from the African continent. Sand supply is controlled mainly by volcanic activity and sea level changes. By means of malacological analyses we could establish a robust stratigraphy over long distances. Snail assemblages show changing characteristic associations through time and can therefor be used as index fossils, a very important partial result of the project.
