SFB 539:  Glaucoma including pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX)

Subject Area Medicine
Term from 1997 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481582

Aim is the exploration of the etiology, the pathogenesis and the follow-up of the glaucomas, a heterogeneous group of eye diseases which in most cases start with an elevated intraocular pressure leading to a visible damage of the optic nerve, which in turn causes advancing visual field defects. Together with diabetes mellitus the glaucomas belong to the most frequent causes of irreversible blindness in the industrialized countries. The research project is divided into three main sections, which deal (1) with glaucoma-related damages of the optic nerve and the retina (Project A.1 - A.5), (2) possible pathogenetic factors like intraocular pressure and outflow resistence in the aqueous-humor draining system of the eye (Project BI.1 - BI.4) as well as the structure and regulation of the blood microcirculation in the eye (Project BII.1 - BII.2), and (3) the biometric planning and model making in all projects (Project C.1). The joining of a further project dealing with the molecular genetics of the glaucomas (Project C.2) is planned in due time.
