SFB 519:  Organ and cell type specificity of tumorigenesis, tumor development and tumor prevention

Subject Area Medicine
Term from 1996 to 2002
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481163

The concept of the collaborative research centre 519 is based on the fact that tumorigenesis is determined by several consecutive layers of sophisticated biological networks. The processes that determine the genetic alterations that cause tumorigenesis are studied on the molecular level. One branch of the collaborative research centre 519analyses factors that suppress tumorigenesis, in particular relevantentities of the xenobiotic metabolism, the DNA repair and apoptosis. Asecond branch investigates specific target genes (proto-oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes) that play a central role in the development oforgan-specific tumors. A third branch is looking at the further development of those tumors. This research focuses on mechanism of autocrine growth stimulation and on modulated expression of adhesion factors on the tumor cell surface.
