SFB 511:  Literature and Anthropology

Subject Area Humanities
Term from 1996 to 2002
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481041

The collaborative research centre 511 "Literature and Anthropology" aims to answer three questions: 1. Why do humans produce literature? 2. What does literature have to say about the human being? 3. How do literary representations relate to other verbal articulations of the human or to other medial forms which represent the human? The first question is addressed by "Anthropology of Literature". In this domain the anthropological foundations of literature and art in general are investigated: In which manners and functions have literary and artistic procedures contributed historically to human needs of mapping and understanding mankind and world? How have, in literature and art, culturally specific concepts of what is "human" been tried out, criticized, and renewed on an intercultural level? The second question is addressed by "Literary Anthropology". Under this aspect, anthropological propositions and implications of literary texts are investigated. "Literature" here is taken in a broad sense and remains open for its contextual discourses. This implies again that culturally specific anthropologies are looked at from an intercultural viewpoint. The third question engenders the interdisciplinary structure of the collaborative research centre. Projects in literature, art history, media science, linguistics, sociology, psychology, cultural anthropology, history and philosophy are densely correlated. The ways in which literature works and formulates what is "human" are thus confronted with anthropological concepts of other disciplines.
