SFB 401:  Flow Modulation and Fluid-Structure Interaction at Airplane Wings

Subject Area Thermal Engineering/Process Engineering
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Term from 1997 to 2008
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5479980

The collaborative research centre is concerned with problems of flow modulation at airplanes in high lift (take off and landing) and transonic cruise flight configuration and furthermore with problems of stationary and non-stationary interaction of fluid and structural forces at elastic wings. In cooperation between the disciplines of aircraft design and aeronautics, aerodynamics, lightweight structures, flight dynamics, mathematics, numerical mathematics, scientific computing and mechanics fundamentals and methods for the modulation of flow, the physical-mathematical modelling, the mathematical well-posedness and the numerical solution are elaborated. The topics of the project area A focus on the aerodynamics of high lift configurations and the alleviation of the vortex systems at take off and landing and at very high Reynolds number flow about wings corresponding to transonic cruise flight of real large aircrafts. The project area B concentrates on methods solving the fully coupled aeroelastic wing problems. In order to achieve the highest level of consistency between reality, mathematical modelling and numerical simulation every subject of the reseach program is dealt with experimentally as well as mathematically and numerically.
