SFB 194:  Structural alterations and dysfunctions in the nervous system

Subject Area Medicine
Term from 1991 to 2002
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5472415

It is the aim of the research projects which are gathered together in the collaborative research centre 194 to unravel the relationship between structural and functional brain disturbances. For these purposes investigations will be performed using methods of functional brain imaging (MRI, MEG, PET) on patients and healthy controls to detect the structural and functional conditions of sensorimotorand neurocognitive disorders following, e.g. stroke or other brain lezions. Furthermore experimental studies will be conducted usingelectrophysiological and molecular methods. The ultimate aim of the collaborative research centre is to identify possible therapeutic strategies: how can the regrowth of spinal fibers be enhanced, how can the functional restitution after brain ischemia be supported, how does deep brain stimulation in patients with Parkinsons disease work, and how can this be optimised, how do brain receptor alterations correlate with the functional disturbances and how can these be modified.
