Project Details
SPP 1130: Infections of the Endothelium
Subject Area
Medicine
Term
from 2002 to 2009
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5471482
With many infections, endothelial cells play important roles as replication site of bacteria and viruses and as a component of the host defence system. The programme aims at the elucidation of the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying blood vessel damage and at throwing light on common principles and differences in the action of bacteria and viruses.
Major topics are: Replication of infections agents in the endothelium:
mechanisms of endotheliotropism; stimulation of replication by induction or repression of host factors; replication in brain endothelia and break down of the blood brain barrier.
Effects of infection on architecture and function of the endothelium:
mechanisms of structural damage and functional disorders in acute infections; vascular degeneration in chronic infections.
Leucocyte activation: host factors involved in leucocyte extravasation; effects of infections agents on leucocyte extravasation.
