Given a smooth manifold M and a certain type of geometric structure, a fundamental problem is to decide whether M admits a structure of this type. Many classical problems in geometry can be stated in this form.The purpose of this project is to investigate the properties of various geometric structures on smooth aspherical manifolds. This class of manifolds has the important property that all topological obstructions for the existence of geometric structures which depend only on the homotopy type can be studied purely on the level of the fundamental group. It contains, for instance, locally symmetric spaces of non-compact type and also solvmanifolds as principal subclasses.
