Many emerging viral infections (EVIs) cause direct encephalitis or cytokine storm-mediated encephalopathy. Host-pathogen co-evolution has shaped immune gene selection, but prolonged innate immune responses in organs like the brain are detrimental. Interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), including apolipoprotein L family members, are balanced between infection containment and neuronal toxicity. Understanding this interplay offers translational potential for innovative approaches in treating EVI-associated neurological sequelae.
