Lower crustal and upper mantle structures have been intensively investigated during the last decades leading to the basic understanding of the plate tectonic development in Northern Europe. The sedimentary formations are well documented by large data sets from hydrocarbon exploration. Parts of them are published in the "Geotectonic Atlas of Northwest Germany" (BGR, Hannover), which contains a unique collection of geoscientific information and a compilation of digital depth information representing both the structure and physical properties of the sedimentary basin. Therefore, it offers an excellent chance to foster interdisciplinary studies and the development of research with strong ties to model database concepts and modelling techniques. Using the data set from the "Geotectonic Atlas of Northwest Germany" in combination with additional gravity and magnetic data as well as a large reflection seismic profile net in the German Bay with a total length of 3.500 km, provided by TGS NOPEC, it is possible to find answers to questions which are tied to data evaluation, storage, handling and visualization, and to 3D modelling of geological processes and structures. In this diverse study, which spans computer sciences and geological applications, we will focus on structural and kinematic modelling of the Northwest German Basin and also on aspects related to the user interface that facilitates the geological and geophysical interpretation.
