Synthesis and investigation of polypeptide rod-coil block copolymers for nanostructured materials
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
The combination of nickel mediated NCA polymerization and living radical polymerization by ATRP, NMP and RAFT is possible using bifunctional initiators. The principle advantage of the approach is that larger polypeptide blocks can be prepared and different and more polar monomers can be introduced into the block copolymer. However, there are some obstacles which still have to be overcome. The macroinitiators in particular those for the ATRP have a significantly reduced activity, therefore only short blocks of flexible polymers can be added, which do not influence the properties of the block copolymers strongly. For shorter polypeptide blocks the amine initiated NCA synthesis is more appropriate and easier to do. Gradient polymer elution chromatography is a very critical method to evaluate the synthetic processes and a better access to this method is crucial for further development of the synthetic methods. Poly(benzyl-L-glutamate) shows an interesting thermoreversible gelation and even below the critical gelation concentration aggregates of the polymer can be found. The same aggregation is found for the block copolymers with relatively long peptide blocks and short PMMA or PtBA blocks. Since so far no block copolymers with longer flexible chains have been investigated, it is not yet clear whether this will change the aggregation behavior.
