The various forms of bioavailable Se play different roles in the biosynthesis of selenoproteins. Therefore, they differ with regard to their essentiality and their toxicity. It is controversial whether supraoptimal Se supplementation is pharmacologically efficient in the control of malignant growth. Cell death can occur passively via necrosis or actively by apoptosis, a process that is defective in malignant cells. Therefore, the actions of selenite(ate) and Se amino acids on (i) apoptosis or necrosis of primary leukocytes/hepatocytes in comparison to their analogous tumor cell lines (ii) stimulated mediator response of whole blood will be studied. The aim of this project is to gain insights into influence of bioavailable Se on immunologically mediated cell death.
