Project Details
Limits of variability in Spanish relative complementation (C09)
Subject Area
Individual Linguistics, Historical Linguistics
Term
since 2022
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 317633480
The project seeks to explore the limits of variability of relative complementation in Spanish by means of cross-linguistic comparisons of production data and acceptability judgements. Building on our previous research, we will concentrate on constructions with bare que and donde, paying particular attention to (a) the Yucatecan linguistic area (Quintana Roo, Mexico), and (b) the comparison of monolingual and bilingual speakers. The central aims will be (i) to compare the usage preferences of Yucatecan Spanish relative complementizers with those of five other varieties of American and European Spanish, and (ii) to narrow down the role of the contact language Yucatec Maya in the Yucatecan Spanish data.
