This project addresses the functional roles of monocytes and regulatory T cells (Treg) during cardiac remodelling after myocardial infarction (MI). Newly developed mouse models we will be used to resolve the temporal dynamic of monocyte subset recruitment and their integration into the cardiac macrophage network during healing. Furthermore, we have identified specific Treg cell subsets and will elucidate their unique roles during cardiac remodelling. We further hypothesise that type IL1-family cytokines and prototypical anti-inflammatory cytokine-dependent interactions are key elements of monocyte – Treg cell communication.
