Tübingen has an outstanding track record for innovative interdisciplinary translational research, as exemplified by three recently awarded Clusters of Excellence and five German Centers of Health Research (DZGs). The Medical Innovation through Interdisciplinarity Clinician Scientist (MINT-CS) program further fosters translation by developing scientifically & clinically competent physicians in our key clinical research areas (e.g. oncology, clinical neuroscience, diabetes/vascular medicine) and in areas underrepresented for the CS career track (e.g. surgical disciplines). MINT-CS will develop translational research projects in close collaboration between clinical and basic science departments, creating synergies with our cross-cutting research fields immunology, imaging, genomics and data science, and our powerful cross-disciplinary research alliances. MINT-CS will be recruited by a transparent and competitive process, based on pre-defined criteria of excellence. An (inter)national call, an online application form and a “CS project fair” shall ensure balanced access of internal and external candidates to the MINT-CS program. Selection is performed in a symposium guided by a Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) with balanced composition (>50% females and 2 external members, of which at least one international member). MINT-CS receive both structured, and individualized scientific, clinical and career development guidance and mentoring by a personal Advisory Committee (AC) and an additional external mentor, both chosen by the CS with the CS Administrative Office. The AC develops with the CS an individualized career plan at the start of the program, ensures protected research time and conductive working conditions, and assists the CS in case of new requirements. The MINT-umbrella provides flexible training and exchange opportunities and a structured qualification curriculum acknowledged by a course certificate “Translational Research”. Dedicated measures supporting female CS, CS with children, and flexible times are in place. To promote international exchange, mobility and the development of strategic partnerships, as well as CS´ independence and leadership, the MINT-CS program allows flexible combination with other funding schemes and/or stays abroad. Furthermore, each MINT-CS receives a flexible starting grant of 30.000 Euro from the medical faculty. Successful MINT-CS will be eligible for the Advanced CS program to be launched at the MFT upon funding of this application. By boosting our CS community and creating successful role models, the MINT-CS program will sustainably increase visibility, attractiveness and acceptance of this unique career track. Successful elements will be integrated in the intramural CS career track at the end of the DFG funding. The program shall be systematically evaluated with assistance of the SAB, using structured anonymous feedback from CS candidates and mentors, as well as (harmonized) exchange with other programs.
