Coordination proposal for the priority program "Fluid-free lubrication systems with high mechanical load".

Subject Area Engineering Design, Machine Elements, Product Development
Term since 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 493132134

The vast majority of tribological systems in technical applications are lubricated with fluids, which are mostly oils and greases. In cases where lubrication with oil or grease is not possible because the lubricant evaporates in a vacuum, for example, a solid is often applied to the component surfaces as an alternative. The lubrication mechanism in solid layers is fundamentally different from tribosystems with fluids as lubricants. The complexity of the research subject requires an interdisciplinary approach in which methods of mechanical engineering and materials technology as well as physical and chemical simulation and analysis methods must be used in a specifically networked manner.Scientific goalsIn the priority program "Fluid-free lubrication systems with high mechanical loads", the mechanisms of friction and wear due to the formation of transfer layers in tribological systems with high mechanical loads when lubricated with solid lubricants are to be researched. In the first funding period, the focus was on the provision processes of the solid lubricant and the associated transfer processes. In the second funding period, the understanding will be used for the synthesis of solid lubricant concepts. The focus will be on applications in machine elements and in drive systems with highly loaded rolling/roller contacts.
