Retrieval of Atmospheric State variables from GLORIA limb emission spectral images (RASGLO)

Fachliche Zuordnung Physik und Chemie der Atmosphäre
Förderung Förderung von 2007 bis 2015
Projektkennung Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Projektnummer 48595793

The aim of this project is to analyze processes controlling upper troposphere / lowermost stratosphere exchange by means of GLORIA remote sensing data during the TACTS, POLSTRACC and CIRRUS-RS measurement campaigns. GLORIA is a gimballed limb observer for radiance imaging of the atmosphere based on imaging FTIR spectrometer technology, mounted in the belly pod of the HALO aircraft. Special instrument modes allow for tomographic measurements of mesoscale events in full 3-D with unprecedented spatial resolution and the derivation of a wide variety of atmospheric constituents. In the first funding period of this project, methods and algorithms for the analysis of tomographic measurements as well as more advanced cloud detection schemes were developed. In the second part of the project (as requested here), preparatory work for the retrieval of temperature, water vapor, CFC-11, PAN, ozone, SF6, HDO, and several other species will be completed, including a detailed analysis of retrieval uncertainties. 2-D and 3-D fields of these species will be derived from real GLORIA measurements obtained during the TACTS, POLSTRACC, and CIRRUS-RS campaigns, followed by detailed quality analysis of the retrieval performance and the products. After that, scientific analyses of this data with respect to mixing events and condensational processes in the upper troposphere and lowermost stratosphere will be performed.
