In evolution reptiles are the earliest creatures that possess a layered cortex similar to mammals. This cortex, however, is of dramatically reduced complexity, making it a prosperous system for the exploration of structure-function relations in cognitive processing. In the proposed project we will establish behavioral tasks for reptiles to explore core cognitive domains. We will subsequently map such functions onto respective brain circuits. Information on network topology and function will then feed into computational network models and ultimately neuromorphic engineering.
