Sensory information processing in a simple animal nervous system (A02)

Subject Area Sensory and Behavioural Biology
Cognitive, Systems and Behavioural Neurobiology
Molecular Biology and Physiology of Neurons and Glial Cells
Term from 2021 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 434434223

Developing the box jellyfish into a model system for visual information processing enables systems level understanding of neuronal networks in response to specific sensory stimuli. Using a combination of electrophysiological, imaging, and molecular techniques, A2 will deliver information on the functionality of not only fully operational neuronal circuitry, but also on the plasticity of functional units during regeneration and “learning”. Visual information processing in the box jellyfish nervous system has great potential for transference into electronics, shifting e.g. pattern recognition capabilities from software to hardware.
