Building on our recent research on responsa and fatwas in Jewish and Islamic law, the project investigates how these genres have changed over the past decades owing to the influence of (a) new media and (b) the integration into positive law on a national level. We have observed that the traditional genres “responsa” and “fatwa” have dissolved to some extent and have come to mix and interfere with new forms of representation, some of them pop-cultural, such as podcasts, videos, TV series, but also law reports and other genres of secular origin. Therefore, the project addresses the entire range of these functionally interrelated forms of representation.
