„Unitarisierung“, „Sonderweg“, „preußisch-deutscher Dualismus“ – those were the keywords in the controversy in West Germany before 1989 over the question who dominated politics in the Kaiserreich 1871-1918, Prussia or the Reich. Since the answers during that debate were strongly influenced by the politics of memory, they are no longer satisfactory. Therefore, this project shall address the question from the perspective of cultural history.
