Role of platelet-mediated resolution-regeneration programmes of bacterial-induced sepsis (B08)

Subject Area Anaesthesiology
Gastroenterology
Pneumology, Thoracic Surgery
Term from 2018 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 374031971

Sepsis is a heterogeneous, life-threatening syndrome based on a misdirected immune response to infection leading to non-resolving processes. Organ dysfunction (e.g. liver inflammation) is the defining component of the clinical picture. The complex underlying pathomechanisms are not well understood and treatment options remain symptomatic. Our preliminary results suggest an essential role for platelets in controlling immune cell migration during the four phases of inflammation: initiation, transition, resolution and regeneration. Bacterial mouse models, in vitro experiments, and in vivo imaging will help elucidate the role of platelets in liver inflammation following bacterial-induced sepsis.
