Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Aus der Vision einer einfachen und intuitiven, auf den Menschen zugeschnittenen Technologie, die Aufgaben versteht und sich einfühlsam auf ihre Nutzer einstellt, begründete CITEC das neue Gebiet der Kognitiven Interaktionstechnologie. Kognition und ihre Nachbildung in technischen Systemen zu verstehen, verbindet das Gebiet mit der KI, aber im Unterschied zu dieser liegt der Fokus auf der Erforschung interaktiver Systeme, in denen Wahrnehmen und Handeln kognitiver Agenten, von Menschen bis zu Robotern, eng und rückbezüglich ineinandergreifen. Dazu verband CITEC die Disziplinen Informatik/Robotik, Biologie, Psychologie, Sportwissenschaft und Linguistik – einschließlich Methoden der Mathematik und Physik –, um Prozesse der Bewegungsintelligenz, Aufmerksamkeit, Situierten Kommunikation und von Gedächtnis und Lernen zu analysieren und in ihrem Zusammenwirken zu verstehen. Ausgehend von Schlüsselaspekten kognitiver Interaktion, zum Beispiel geschicktes Greifen und Manipulieren, bio-inspirierte Robotikkonzepte oder soziale Interaktion, folgte CITEC in zwei Förderphasen einem stetigen Gradienten in Richtung einer zunehmenden Integration von Teilfähigkeiten. Dies bündelte Forschungsergebnisse in etlichen anspruchsvollen Demonstratorsystemen: etwa dem bimanuellen FAMULA-Roboter, dem expressiven Roboterkopf Flobi, dem Insektenroboter HECTOR, der virtuellen Trainingsumgebung ICSPACE oder Smart-Home-Demonstratoren wie KogniHome. CITECs Forschungsergebnisse führten zu nahezu 5.000 Veröffentlichungen seit Einrichtung des Clusters in 2007. Für sein Thema hat CITEC eine stark interdisziplinäre Forschungsumgebung geschaffen. Sie verband mehr als 40 Gruppen und über 700 Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter während der gesamten Förderlaufzeit. Ein eigens konzipierter Forschungsbau mit einer maßgeschneiderten Laborinfrastruktur ermöglicht die Zusammenführung von Experimenten und Forschungslinien, um kognitive Interaktion mit komplexen und datenintensiven Hardware-Software-Prototypen detailliert zu analysieren. Eine integrierte Graduiertenschule brachte mehr als 250 Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden auf ihren Karriereweg. Zugleich hat CITEC ein vielfältiges Netzwerk aus Partnern aufgebaut. Darunter internationale Forschungsnetzwerke, wie das CITEC-initiierte thematische Netzwerk Interaktive Intelligente Systeme (TN-IIS), eine Virtuelle Fakultät aus führenden KI-, Robotik- und Gehirnforscherinnen und -forschern sowie strategische Partnerschaften mit bedeutenden Anwendern und Firmen: HONDA (für Robotik), MIELE (für Haushaltsgeräte), BERTELSMANN (für intelligente Medien), und BETHEL (für Assistenztechnologien für Senioren oder Menschen mit Behinderung), darüber hinaus Partnerschaften mit kleinen und mittelständischen regionalen Unternehmen sowie zahlreichen Beteiligungen an Forschungsverbünden auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene. Dabei warben CITEC-Wissenschaftlerinnen und -Wissenschaftler insgesamt nahezu 70 Mio. EUR an Drittmitteln zusätzlich zur Exzellenzförderung ein.
