The Saarbrücken Graduate School of Computer Science will encompass all computer science doctoral work at Saarland University. Its aim is to provide scientific education of such quality and to attract students of such caliber so that the graduate school will be consistently ranked among the top computer science PhD programmes in the world. Besides the university computer science department, the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence are actively involved in the graduate school. These four institutes, in close proximity to one another directly on the campus of Saarland University in Saarbrücken, comprise one of the largest centres of advanced computer science research in Europe.
The Saarbrücken model for graduate and doctoral studies is based on structures in place in the USA. Excellent students of computer science with strong research interests can apply for admission into the graduate school including a scholarship right after completion of their Bachelor's degree. The doctoral programme is divided into a three-semester preparatory phase of course work to ensure sufficient scientific breadth, and the research and dissertation phase to be entered after successful completion of the qualifying exam. Alternatively, candidates may enter according to the traditional model with a Master's degree, do preparatory course work as individually needed, and go on to the research dissertation phase after their qualifying exam. Students of the Graduate School in the preparatory phase will be supported with scholarships or student assistantships. The dissertation phase will be supported by research assistantships or a lesser number of fellowships. Special support is foreseen for female students.
The Saarbrücken Graduate School of Computer Science has a competitive admissions process. All students will benefit from intensive advising and monitoring. Their progress will be reviewed each semester by all faculty members. Furthermore, the transferal of soft skills will be an important part of the programme, for example on such topics as "Scientific Writing and Presentation". Common office space for all students of the graduate school in the preparatory phase is intended to foster their esprit de corps. The language of instruction and the general working language of the graduate school is English.
