How do images in the mode of the comic succeed in affecting viewers and influencing invective processes? This question will be examined as part of the sub-project when exploring the aesthetics of image provocation between 1500 and 1800. Complementing the research on pictorial parody, which was conducted in the first funding period, the project now aims to explore how a critically provocative pictorial language developed, and to what extent it contributed to the autonomization of art and artists. The project will analyze invective gestures, caricatures, and violations of decorum. Motifs, genres, and the role of the artist as provocateur will be examined and compared.
