This basic science project targets the prevention and treatment of metabolic disease. The long term goal is to identify dietary components which might counteract the development of type 2 diabetes. Collected data indicate that glucose homeostasis and therefore the prevalence of diabetes is not only influenced by the number of calories (energy content) in the diet, but also by the composition (protein content) of the diet. For this reason, we will use the New Zealand Obese mouse, a model for type 2 diabetes, to investigate if the dietary protein content has an impact on a high-caloric (diabetogenic) diet and which endocrine signals may be responsible for the anti-diabetogenic effect.
