Mortality and associated characteristics of an adult population with mental disorders
Final Report Abstract
The aim of the research project was to provide new knowledge about mortality and time to death among people with psychiatric disorders compared to people without. Substance use disorders were a focus of the work. A general population sample of adult residents in north- ern Germany was used. It had been drawn twenty years before. For the study participants, psychiatric diagnoses had been provided using an internationally standardized interview. Now, the work program was to verify the vital status of the study participants. For each of them, it was ascertained whether the person had been deceased and if so at which date. The death certificates were analyzed. The findings include a higher mortality and shorter time to death of those with single psychiatric disorders compared to those without. The data analysis according to a particularly short time to death among study participants with severe depend- ence of or with abstinence from alcohol suggest a particularly high relevance of these disor- ders for public health, for a rethinking of the care for addicted people and for the prevention of chronic health disorders in populations.
