High resolution microscopy using a scattering layer
Final Report Abstract
We developed scatter-plate microscopy, a lensless high resolution imaging technique with variable magnification, variable NA, variable working distance and variable focal length. Combined with deconvolution algorithms the method realizes diffraction limited resolution. Unfortunately, we failed in our efforts to improve the image quality by developing a customized scatter-plate design. However we were able to improve the method and extend its applicability with other means. The principles of the method can play a significant role in developing new techniques for imaging through scattering media. Within the project, we could demonstrate that the technique is also realizable in a single-shot configuration with temporal modulated scatter-plates. This opens up the possibility to use memory effect based imaging techniques for imaging through fog, smoke or emulsions. We further developed, based on the correlation technique of the scatter-plate microscope, a new lensless single-pixel imaging tool that is able to realize three-dimensional and polychromatic imaging. Our single-pixel scatter-plate microscope also benefits from variable magnification, variable NA and variable focal length. It is further easy to implement and we see the chance to miniaturize its setup.
