Project Details
Roman Prayers and Hymns within educational contexts of the Roman Republic and Imperial Era (C02)
Subject Area
Greek and Latin Philology
Term
from 2015 to 2020
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 244798977
The project pursues the question of how relevant the aspect of “education” is for prayers and sacred hymns as literary products. A much greater emphasis than has been done so far is to be put on how these specific forms of religious speech are contextualized. The aim is to discern where, why and for what purpose prayers and hymns were included in a work as well as in how far they serve to exhibit “education” in their specific context. Additionally, it shall be explored in how far prayers and hymns proclaim an education-enhancing effect and how much authority the authors of literary prayers and hymns claim for themselves.
