Project identifier

The European research training group aims to systematize and integrate the research from the three European centres in the area of intergrouprelations. The scope of this research programme is concerned with the antecedents of, and processes underlying, the development andpsychosocial effects of constructive and destructive relations between groups. This incorporates such fundamental issues as outgroupdevaluation, intergroup discrimination and cooperation, tolerance towards outgroups and multicultural diversity. A social psychologicalanalysis of the formative processes implicated in various intergroup phenomena is complemented by a developmental perspective concerned with processes and outcomes of stability and change in the development of group relations over the life-span. These two perspectives relate to four main themes of research: cognitive aspects of intergroup relations, intergroup attitudes and prejudice, determinants of intergroup behavior, outcomes of intergroup processes. Theparticipating research groups have an extensive track record in conducting field and laboratory research in these areas, thus providing a broad range of training opportunities for graduatestudents and post-doctoral fellows.
