Subject Area

Term
from 2015 to 2019
Project identifier

For decades, researchers have observed that the Hansa appeared weak compared to standards of modern statehood, but nevertheless dominated north-German trade. By looking into conflicts over resources and discourses of weakness, the dynamics of the legal-political structure of the Hansa can be assessed, and synchronic and diachronic comparisons become possible. For this reason research-constellations within and around the Hansa constitute the focus of this research. One part of the project addresses such resource-problems by looking into maritime labor markets and their regulation in the Atlantic and Baltic sea. A second part of the project looks into the emergence of law codices in Hansa areas and focuses on how the Hansa dealt with perceived weakness.
