Aim: To research and understand the use of a unique mixed reality environment, that combines a novel virtual reality procedural surgical simulator with a computerized anesthesia mannequin simulator, for the training and assessment of individual medical experts and, for the first time, multidisciplinary medical teams in surgery.Research topics: We focus on the following novel contributions, (i) development of robust performance metrics for objective assessment of technical skills (e.g. instrument handling, usage of medical imaging devices) and non-technical skills (e.g. situation awareness, interpersonal communication), (ii) development and evaluation of metrics which capture errors that lead to and occur during and after adverse situations, (iii) implementation of deliberate exposure to adverse events in the augmentation of error perception, mediation of error recovery strategies, and performance assessment, and (iv) assessment of team dynamics based on performance metrics.
