Podocytes, epithelial pericytes in kidney glomeruli, are key determinants of renal filtration by reconstituting the slit diaphragm (SD), the decisive barrier of the multi-layered filter and target of multiple hereditary diseases. This project directly investigates architecture, organization and function of SD complexes including comprehensive high-resolution proteomic techniques to analyze transmembrane proteins. Moreover we will determine the modification and time-dependent changes of SD complexes by disease-induced stress stimuli.
