During the last decade, the RATIP program has been developed for studying the level structures and properties of open-shell atoms and ions. For many atomic processes, which include the emission or the capture of electrons, this program has become today quite a standard within the framework of relativistic atomic theory. To enlarge the capabilities of the RATIP program, however, a number of improvements are desirable in order to support the interpretation of high-resolution experiments in the future. Presently, the main requests concern (i) the numerical presentation of the electron continuum and the scattering states as needed, for example, for the accurate computation of (Auger and photoionization) transition amplitudes as well as (ii) the use and combination of these amplitudes within the concepts of the density matrix theory. For many ionization processes, in addition, (iii) the rearrangement of the electron density need to be taken into account in order to obtain a better understanding of the intensities and shake processes as observed by experiment. The principal aim of the project is therefore to search for new techniques which, apart from the level energies, may help in providing accurate atomic transition ampitudes.
