Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
This project helped increasing our knowledge on the functional consequences of sequence variations in the MX1 protein of different Mus species. It showed that some MX1 variants acquired mutations that either reduce the metabolic stability of the mature protein or lower the binding affinity of MX1 for its viral target. This work forms a solid basis for future studies aimed at understanding why evolution select for MX1 variants with reduced activity in some murine species. At present this important question remains entirely unresolved.
