GSC 106:  Graduate School for Life Sciences (GSLS)

Subject Area Microbiology, Virology and Immunology
Term from 2006 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 24389404

The Graduate School for Life Sciences (GSLS) at the University of Würzburg results from a common initiative of the Faculties of Biology, Medicine, Chemistry and Pharmacy, Physics, and Philosophy. It is the integration of ongoing efforts in graduate training in the life sciences, where currently about 100 graduate students are enrolled in a "Class of Biomedicine". The establishment and integration of further programmes raises the number of participating graduate students to about 350. Graduate students and faculty are brought together in the GSLS, an independent body of the University of Würzburg, under the common umbrella of the International Graduate School - University of Würzburg. Regulations for conferring the doctorate have been enacted for the degrees (Dr. rer. nat., alternatively PhD) awarded by the GSLS.
The Graduate School for Life Sciences comprises five Classes covering the whole spectrum of the life sciences (Biomedicine, MD/PhD programme, Infection and Immunity, Neuroscience, Integrative Biology) which are based on existing Collaborative Research Centres and other coordinated research initiatives. The classes are further subdivided into programmes of 15 to 25 graduate students, which provide the primary reference points for the students. The GSLS educates students financed by
(1) scholar-ships,
(2) fellowships from the MD/PhD-programme,
(3) fellowships of graduate programmes from extramural funds,
(4) positions from DFG-funded collaborative projects, and
(5) individual grants. Applications are screened by the GSLS office, students are selected by Programme and Admission Committees, and applicants are admitted by an auction-type mode. After admission, a Supervisory Committee together with the student develops an Individual Training and Supervision Plan.
Students participate in a three-year training programme conducted in English that encompasses the following elements: research group and programme seminars, journal clubs, courses taught by students, courses in soft skills, scientific conduct and ethics, retreats and summer schools, participation in international conferences, and publication of results. Integration into international networks and self-organisation of the students are essential aspects. Students are expected to graduate after approximately three years. An Award System is established as a special stimulus and bonus to strive for excellence. An Alumni Programme and Career Development Fellowships facilitate the next career steps of the students.
