Sensory neurons in the colon are involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) (1-8). Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels in sensory neurons control the release of the immunomodulatory neuropeptides substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) (1). The aim of this project is to elucidate mechanisms of neuro-immune interaction between these neuropeptides, the colonic epithelium and mucosal immune system in mouse models of colitis. Moreover, the regulation of SP, CGRP as well as their receptors NK1R and CLR/RAMP1 will be analyzed in biopsies of patients with IBD. These data may give new insights into the immune pathogenesis of IBD. Pharmacological inhibition of neuropeptide effects may serve as a new therapeutic strategy against IBD.
