Optik, Quantenoptik und Physik der Atome, Moleküle und Plasmen
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Optik ist eine der wichtigsten Technologien dieses Jahrhunderts, das als Jahrhundert des Photons in die Geschichte eingehen kann. Optik und optische Technologien haben einen starken Einfluss auf nahezu alle Bereiche des täglichen Lebens und überspannen einen weiten Anwendungsbereich, z.B. in der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie, in der Prozess- und Verfahrenstechnik, in der Medizin und Medizintechnik, dem Life-Science-Engineering und in der Energie- und Umwelttechnik. Optik bildet eine Schlüsseltechnologie. Innovationen auf dem Gebiet der Optik und der optischen Technologien sind deshalb nicht nur aus sich selbst heraus von Bedeutung, sie beeinflussen auch alle anderen Teilbereiche des öffentlichen Lebens. Zur vollen Ausschöpfung dieses Potentials ist es notwendig, die Ausbildung an die Anforderungen von Optik und optischen Technologien anzupassen. Die Herausforderungen bestehen in der Interdisziplinarität der Optik mit ihren Anwendungen. Physiker, Chemiker, Biologen, Ärzte und Ingenieure arbeiten in ihren Disziplinen oftmals mit ähnlichen Methoden, aber meist nicht zusammen und damit ohne den gewünschten Wissenstransfer zwischen diesen Disziplinen. Wegen dieser Breite ist die Effizienz in der Forschung und Entwicklung auf diesem Gebiet eher gering und kann beispielsweise durch eine verbesserte akademische Ausbildung erhöht werden. Die Doktorandenausbildung persönlich und technisch hochbegabter junger Wissenschaftler auf diesem breiten Gebiet ermöglicht weitere Fortschritte und speziell solche in den immer wichtiger werdenden Grenzbereichen der beteiligten Disziplinen Physik, Ingenieurwissenschaften und Medizin. Optische Technologien bilden so eine der starken Säulen künftiger Innovationen und damit für die Konkurrenzfähigkeit des Standorts Deutschland. Die Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) bietet die Infrastruktur und fachliche Kompetenz in allen genannten Disziplinen in der Erlangen Graduate School in Advanced Optical Technologies (SAOT) zur Schaffung eines weltweit führenden Zentrums der Ausbildung in Optik und optischen Technologien. Die SAOT bietet so ein interdisziplinäres und exzellentes Forschungs- und Ausbildungsprogramm innerhalb eines breiten internationalen Netzwerkes mit ausgewiesenen Experten zur Förderung von Innovationen und Führungskompetenz auf den Gebieten Optische Messtechnik, Optische Materialbearbeitung, Optik in der Medizin, Optik in der Kommunikations- und Informationstechnik, Optische Materialien und Systeme und Rechnergestützte Optik.
