GSC 14: Berlin Mathematical School
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Die Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) ist die gemeinsame Graduiertenschule der Mathematikinstitute der drei großen Berliner Universitäten. Von 2006 bis 2018 wurde sie im Rahmen der Exzellenzinitiative des Bundes und der Länder gefördert. Als eine der in der ersten Runde der Exzellenzinitiative ausgewählten Einrichtungen startete die BMS bereits im Herbst 2006 mit voller Kraft und erreichte bald die vollständige Umsetzung der im Antrag von 2006 angekündigten Agenda: Sie richtete ein neues, über die drei Universitäten abgestimmtes Kursprogramm ein, das in Englisch unterrichtet wird; begann mit der aktiven Werbung ihres Programms und richtet sich dabei speziell an herausragende Studentinnen; baute eine diverse, international zusammengesetzte Studierendenschaft auf, denen sie aktives Mentoring und Betreuung sowie administrative Unterstützung durch das BMS One-Stop Office bietet, und stellte ihnen Lounges und Büroräume an allen drei Universitäten zur Verfügung. Die BMS hat sich als dauerhafte Einrichtung, die mittlerweile zu ihrer vollen Größe mit über 170 Studierenden angewachsen ist, etabliert. Das Graduiertenprogramm besteht aus der Kursphase (Phase I, drei bis vier Semester), die vom Bachelor zu einem Master, und der Dissertationsphase (Phase II, vier bis sechs Semester), die zur Promotion an einer der Universitäten führt. Die inzwischen über 300 Alumni sind sowohl im akademischen Bereich wie auch in Wirtschaft und Industrie äußerst erfolgreich. Die Studierenden zeigten von Beginn an großes Engagement, weitere Aktivitäten zu organisieren und ein Zugehörigkeitsgefühl zur „BMS-Familie“ zu schaffen. Der Erfolg der BMS basiert auf vier Schlüsselelementen: ◦ Das strukturierte Graduiertenprogramm, das das in Englisch von den Professoren der BMS unterrichtete Kursprogramm, die BMS Friday Kolloquien und das Soft-Skills-Trainingsprogramm beinhaltet. ◦ Die volle Integration der BMS Studierenden in Berlins aktive Forschungsumgebung in reiner und angewandter Mathematik, die Graduiertenkollegs, IMPRSs, SFBs, und weiteren Projekten. Die Einführung der Postdoc-Programms in der zweiten Förderperiode hat dies noch vertieft. ◦ Das professionelle Management, das alle Aspekte der BMS – inklusive der Rekrutierung und des Mentoring der Studierenden – koordiniert und das BMS One-Stop Office betreibt. ◦ Die effektive Qualitätskontrolle aller Aspekte der BMS: Marketing und Zulassungsverfahren, Studienprogramm, Leistungen der Studierenden, Lehre und Mentoring-Programm. Die BMS stellt so ein Modell für herausragende Graduiertenausbildung dar und hatte dadurch signifikanten strukturellen Einfluss auf ihre Heimatuniversitäten. Durch ihren Erfolg wurde die BMS integraler Bestandteil des Antrags für den Exzellenzcluster MATH+ und trug maßgeblich zu dessen Erfolg in der Exzellenzstrategie bei. Im Rahmen von MATH+ wird die Kernidee der BMS zukünftig weiterentwickelt: ein dauerhafter Rahmen für Exzellenz in der Promotionsausbildung in Mathematik zu sein, der der Gesamtheit der Berliner Mathematik zugute kommt und weltweit um die besten Studierenden kämpft.
