Exploratory Modeling of Water and Biogeochemical Dynamics in the Earth’s Critical Zone (B04)

Subject Area Hydrogeology, Hydrology, Limnology, Urban Water Management, Water Chemistry, Integrated Water Resources Management
Term since 2013
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 218627073

This project investigates how deep surface signals (i.e., fluxes of water, nitrogen, and carbon) enter the Critical Zone and how they are transformed and buffered on their passage through the Critical Zone. For this, a robust multi-compartment (forest, soil, groundwater) regional model will be developed describing the full carbon–nitrogen–water dynamics from the surface through the subsurface to the groundwater and rivers making use of a unique multiscale parametrization technique. The project will provide a prediction and hypothesis testing tool.
