Our overall goal is to better understand the role of electronic correlations in the iron-based superconductors. It is established that effective one-particle theories are successful in predicting the main features of the band structure of the Fe-pnictides. Nevertheless, it becomes increasingly evident that the many-body effects are strong in these systems. Perhaps, the most prominent example of it is an observation of electronically driven nematicity in the parent compounds of ferro-pnictides supported by various experimental probes. In this proposal we aim at developing a microscopic description of nematic order and the associated strong magnetoelastic coupling. In addition we will develop the theoretical framework for a number of important experiments that are being used to probe nematicity: elastic properties, NMR spin lattice relaxation rate, the resistivity, Hall effect and thermopower anisotropy, and ultrafast optics experiments.
