The Priority Programme (SPP) SPPEXA is different from other SPP with respect to its genesis, its volume, its funding via DFG’s Strategy Fund, with respect to the range of disciplines involved, and to a clear strategic orientation towards a set of time-critical objectives. Therefore, despite its distributed structure, SPPEXA also resembles a Collaborative Research Centre to a large extent. Its successful implementation and evolution will require both more and more intense structural measures. The Coordination Project presented in this proposal comprises all intended SPPEXAwide activities, including steering and coordination, internal and international collaboration and networking, and educational activities.The strategic steering and coordination is guaranteed by the two scientific coordinators, the steering committee, and a researcher experienced both in SPPEXA-relevant research topics and in project management issues. The function of this scientific programme manager is similar to that of a managing director of a Collaborative Research Center: ensure the overall progress towards SPPEXA’s goals; plan and coordinate the corporate activities; assist consortia with the implementation of additional activities (workshops, education, etc.); form an interface to international partners and programmes.First links of SPPEXA to other initiatives in the field of high-performance computing (HPC) outside Germany (NSF, DOE) have already been prepared during the initiation phase, and more will follow. Many possibilities to invite and collaborate with international researchers (workshops, doctoral retreats, etc.) as well as SPPEXA’s organized international conferences will further tighten the relations of SPPEXA with the international HPC community and ensure that SPPEXA becomes a highly visible component of fundamental research in HPC, nationally and internationally.
