In contrast to conventional videos, digital videos possess a number of interactive features which allow the processing of their contents in a more active and self-regulated fashion. Current research on this topic suggests that these features lead to both a change in instructional uses of videos in classroom and different usage strategies on the part of the pupils. Based on these findings, the learning effectiveness of digitized videos, the changes in processing strategies and the role of individual levels of media literacy shall be determined and compared with that of conventional learning materials (i.e. illustrated texts and noninteractive videos) in a naturalistic instructional context of history education.
