Project Details
Surveillance of systemic iron levels in response to stress by the hepcidin/ferroportin regulatory system (16)
Subject Area
Cell Biology
Term
from 2012 to 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 201348542
Iron reacts with hydrogen or lipid peroxides to generate radicals that damage our cells. The Muckenthaler group (TP16) studies the surveillance mechanism that prevents iron stress by the hepcidin/ferroportin regulatory axis. We will focus on the hepcidin response to iron stress in liver sinusoidal endothelial cells and identify the E3 ligases that mediate hepcidin controlled ferroportin degradation. Furthermore, we will investigate the role of histone deacetylases that regulate the iron exporter ferroportin during the acute phase response.
