Emerging cloud technologies promise the cost-efficient operation of software systems with theoretically unlimited scalability. Additionally, Platform as a Service (PaaS) solutions can reduce development efforts by shifting tasks related to provisioning and operation to PaaS providers. While the architecture of a software system (still) determines its scalability and performance, the complexity and transparency of the underlying technology stack make it hard (or even impossible) for software architects to assess the implications of individual design decisions. In the scope of the proposed transfer project, we extend our previous work, the Palladio Component Model (PCM), to evaluate the scalability of software systems in a new, highly relevant context. Furthermore, we plan to significantly simplify the application of SPE aligning the PCM with software development processes. To assess the applicability of our approach in practice, we plan to conduct a controlled experiment with SAP developers, researchers, and students.
