By developing the infrastructure for art historical photo collections as proposed here, an instrument for indexing, publishing and interconnecting of complex data stocks will be available. It will map stocks and collection structures having evolved over time into a flexible data model also assignable to other cultural heritage application scenarios. Cataloguing data of photographic media on the one hand and of depicted objects on the other hand are interlinked into a concise data structure. The particular achievement of this model lies in fully preserving and keeping available the diversity, complexity and integrity of data from different sources, while providing efficient and user-friendly search options at the same time. An additional improvement closely connected to the data model is the application of the semantic interface standard LIDO 1.0, the standard for interchanging collection-related metadata approved of by leading research institutions. Thus a LIDO-based infrastructure develops into a hub in increasingly interconnected systems, especially as cross-national portals such as Europeana and several leading software producers have started to implement the standard. The single or joint applications related to the frame application presented here take the task of proving the proposed infrastructure in practical collection contexts and establishing its long-term use.
