The Transformation of Greek Manuscripts of Aristotelean Texts in the Late Byzantine Period and the Italian Renaissance (C06)

Subject Area Greek and Latin Philology
Term from 2011 to 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 181924784

This sub-project examines how Greek manuscripts transmit and re-arrange groups of treatises of the works of Aristotle along with relevant commentary, and the process of constituting these ‘corpus organisers’, which often represented a smaller selection from the large corpus of Aristotelean works. The cultural developments and discontinuities of the Palaiologan era and the Italian Renaissance saw the creation of manuscripts that represented either the whole Aristotelean corpus or substantial parts of it, as well as a selection of commentary deemed relevant, with the revisions of these corpora mirroring fundamental cultural change. The project focuses on manuscripts from the 13th to 15th century.
